Revolutionizing Surface Mount Technology with AI
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) has been a cornerstone in modern electronics manufacturing, enabling the production of high-performance electronic devices. Over the years, several advancements within the SMT industry have significantly enhanced speed as well as accuracy in the assembly process. Among these developments, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands out as a game-changer, particularly in paste printing and placement processes.

AI-driven Analytics
Through AI-driven analytics, SMT machines gather vast amounts of data from interconnected systems. This data - when processed using sophisticated algorithms - provides actionable insights that enable continuous improvement and predictive maintenance strategies.
Within this area, Panasonic has recently launched the new predictive maintenance tool called APC-5M. APC stands for Advanced Process Control, whereas 5M considers the variances of huMan, machine, material, method and measurement.
Optimized SMT operations thanks to AI
Panasonic Paste printers equipped with AI capabilities are able to monitor various factors such as printing pressure, printing speed, snap off speed in real-time, even solder paste viscosity and stencil tension by equipping additional hardware options. By processing this data, AI algorithms optimize the printing parameters, ensuring consistent and uniform deposition of solder paste on PCBs.
Within the placement area, modern Panasonic placement machines utilize AI algorithms to monitor and analyze machine conditions in real-time. Overall, AI enables predictive maintenance, and optimizes SMT operations.
Furthermore, AI-powered SMT equipment can track real-time movements of conveyor systems, heads and axes. With the help of machine learning algorithms, these systems can continuously learn from previous operations to display real usage of essential hardware parts as well as to indicate and reduce overall maintenance efforts. Once the machine monitors abnormal conditions, it can provide warnings and even stop functions to ensure quality.
Next Wave of Advancement
The integration of AI in paste printers and placement machines marks a significant leap forward in Surface Mount Technology, enabling faster time-to-market, lower production costs, and superior product quality. As the industry continues to embrace AI technologies, we can expect further innovations that will drive the next wave of advancement in electronics manufacturing.

Fighting Food Waste with AI and Digital Innovation
Fresh food is the lifeblood of grocery retail. It draws in customers, sets a store apart, and drives daily foot traffic. But this advantage comes at a cost. The perishable nature of fresh products means that ensuring on-shelf availability often leads to overstocking—and with it, high levels of food waste and lost margin.
